How To: Heart Wedding Cocktail Straw Toppers

It’s really quite a frivolous affair, straw toppers.

In my experience they’re usually a waste of money, especially those designated for cocktails. People drink cocktails, they get sloshed, and they don’t tend to appreciate, nay remember, that extra bit of pretty hanging on their straws. But then again, what fun are parties if they aren’t the absolute epitome of frivolous excess? And weddings in particular, is all that, and the additional sparkly disco ball on top. Ergo, straw toppers are absolutely necessary for weddings! Just save your money, and do it yourself – it’s really easy!

There are so many variations of toppers, here’s a tutorial on one if you’ve got a bit more time on your hands as you’ll be working with two different types of material.

Tools and Material
Straws (preferably patterned striped ones, but I used different colored ones here)
Plain art card
Corrugated card (of various colors)
Glue
Scissors
Blade
Templates (designed & printed out on card paper)

How To

1. Print out your template. As you’re working with a very small area, you don’t need anything too fancy (I used a heart shaped one here as it was for a wedding). Once printed, cut them out.

2. Cut out strips of the corrugated card. Strip size is about a length of 2.5 inches, and a height of 0.5 inches. Snip an inverted V on both sides to give it a flag-like effect.

3. Slice two horizontal slits on the heart, about an inch apart, and wide enough to insert a straw.

4. Insert the straw into the heart in a front – back – front method. Make sure the heart is closer to the top of the straw (if there’s a bendy bit, make sure it sits on the bendy bit as it’ll be more secure). Then, at the back of the straw, put two dollops of glue (make sure that it’s even!)

Pick a corrugated flag (of a color that contrasts nicely to the straw), and attach it to the heart by pressing firmly on the two sides with the glue.

Let it stand for a while to dry.

5. Done! Just make sure you try to get some snaps in before you drink the night away!
